Immunofixation (IFE), Serum

The Immunofixation (IFE) test is a specialized blood test used to identify abnormal proteins in the blood, particularly monoclonal immunoglobulins or M-proteins.

hese proteins are produced by abnormal plasma cells and are often associated with various blood disorders, including multiple myeloma, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, and other forms of gammopathies. The IFE test is highly sensitive and specific, making it a crucial tool for diagnosing these conditions, monitoring disease progression, and evaluating treatment effectiveness.

During the Immunofixation test, a blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The sample undergoes electrophoresis, a process that separates proteins based on their size and charge, followed by the application of specific antibodies to identify and fix the targeted proteins.

The results, typically available within a few days, provide detailed information about the presence and type of abnormal proteins, helping healthcare providers make informed decisions about diagnosis and management of blood disorders.
