TESTOSTERONE, FREE & TOTAL
This test measures both Total and Free Testosterone and can be ordered for both men and women. For men, this test evaluates testicular function where obesity, liver or thyroid disorders may change the testosterone-binding proteins. For women, this test evaluates masculinization and hirsutism.
Low testosterone levels could be a sign of pituitary gland problems. High testosterone levels may also occur in less serious conditions. For example, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which can affect males and females, is a rare but natural cause for elevated testosterone production.
Testosterone that is not bound to proteins is called free testosterone and is the biologically active form of the hormone. This test can help identify whether you have low testosterone levels, normal testosterone levels, or high testosterone levels.
The test is also performed to screen for any damages or disease of ovaries, testes, adrenal or pituitary gland. For females, free testosterone levels are more important to diagnose infertility and PCOD.
